And as I mentioned, the autoupdate patch mangled my office PCs third party software, making it incompatible. What kind of upgrade is so bunged it disables other apps?

and if they've changed th eprce, that's new because they were selling it.

I don't want to disturb the MS hatefest, but two little facts:

1. IE7 has exactly the same price as Firefox, Safari, and Opera. $0.

2. Microsoft has already distributed XP autoupdates to deal with the change in DST. There's also a download for people who turned off autoupdate. The statement that their solution is to upgrade to Vista is simply false.

That's even what the story says. Microsoft did the same thing as Apple: Distribute patches for supported versions of their operating system, but the patches only work if you allow your OS to be patched.

Any price for a browser is too much when Firefox, Safari and Opera are free.

Another case in point presented itself at work today: a Windows upgrade that downloaded automatically and left no choice to install or not, broke the compatibility with a third party app that I can't do my job without. The school's entire cataloging staff, of five people on two campuses were unable to do any cataloging today and maybe tomorrow until OCLC puts out the patch. This is what Microsoft calls an upgrade.

If it didn't come preloaded on your computer, it's about $190, Walt, the cost of Windows in a box because it's part of the operating system. That doesn't include the cost of the virus software and adware software you have to have if you use it because it's such a mess, and no, the stuff Microsoft provides isn't good enough. Every time I get a Microsoft upgrade I have to run my adware program because they add a tracking cookie to my computer.

Microsoft's solution for the time shift is for people to upgrade to Vista, which requires hardware upgrades that most people don't want or need.

I'm sorry, but what was the "wildly inflated price tag" on IE7?

I must have missed something...
