I think that the much discussed Religious Impulse is really just our fascination with stories and so long as we have some sort of emotionally satisfying narrative at hand, it serves that impulse. Also, season 3 of Doctor Who was all about story telling. Martha telling everyone she met about the Doctor and most episodes involved the concept of meta-narrative, where characters had to determine for themselves the truth vs fiction of the situation.
