It's interesting how some things just drop out of the collective consciousness. Dirty Harry was one of the first full blown memes to escape from pop culture into the world at large. Now it's an obscure reference.

That would have been nice to know, actually, since I have the same no advertisement policy. I've emailed her and let her know I'll no longer be posting her astroturf. I was lazy and should have checked aorund better but it's for a good cause at least, and not some gold farmer from Glenbeckistan.

Ms. O'Brien makes some excellent points. I think, however, she should disclose the fact that she represents attorneys who represent patients with asbestos-related diseases. (She approached me with a request to place her website on my blog, but I declined since I don't accept advertising.) No criticism of you, Keith, but I think Ms. O'Brien owed you and your readers full disclosure.

A short while back I was teaching a drama class of teenage kids. They were smart kids, well motivated, bright and fun to work with. During one workshop I described a character we were 'developing' as being like 'Dirty Harry'.

Blank looks.

"You know? Like in the Dity Harry movies? ' Go on, punk, make my day...'?"

Pause.

"Clint Eastwood?"

Nothing. Not a flicker of recognition.

I've heard that that era of novels was pretty good. May have to check them out.

Not to say the new Star Trek movie didn't have it's problems. Red Matter doesn't just make singularities, it also makes plot holes you could fly a Starship through.

You know what the best Star Trek is? The first three dozen or so novels--the ones written before The Next Generation, when the suits weren't paying attention to what the writers were doing. All my favorite Star Trek stories are from that era.

On the other hand... I loved the new movie while I was watching it, but fell out of love about half an hour after it was over.

Hey Keith,

I saw your comment on today's Whatever and decided to drop by, if for no other reason than solidarity as a fellow Sci-Fi writer-in-the-making ;-)

However i've quite enjoyed reading your 'The Story Thus Far' blog posts [1] and will probably pop by from time to time to catch up.

If you're at all interested in reading much of the same, don't hesitate to pop by my own recently started blog: http://jopearson.blog.com/

Cheers,

Jo

In fact, evolution IS the pre-eminent science fiction. Beware!

Snark really is redundant with these loons. Jonathan Swift would have a hard time making a living these days, because nothing he could invent for purposes of satire would sound any crazier than what real fundies actually believe.
